What steps can you take to ensure that lesbians and gays are not discriminated against? One of the biggest disadvantages of the high profile lobbying being conducted by agencies working in favor of gay and lesbian empowerment is that the ordinary man on the street feels excluded. The ordinary man on the street feels that he or she cannot contribute in any manner whatsoever.
Whenever people read about measures to improve the condition of gays and lesbians, it is always is related to the legislature, Washington, the Senate or other such high profile power centers. What can you do to make a difference to the LGBT community living in and around your neighborhood?
The first thing that you must understand is that there is no need for the individuals to identify themselves just to enjoy benefits. This is a complication that many people face and this issue compels them to conclude that they cannot make a difference.
Why don’t you have a word with owners of your local mall, store owners around your neighborhood and other employers and encourage them to put banners proclaiming that they provide equal opportunity to employees irrespective of sexual orientation? Your purpose will be served as long as members of the LGBT community views this and recognizes that they can use their skills to get decent and respectable employment.
The biggest advantage of this approach is that the community will no longer feel as if it is alienated. Asking members of the community to step up and face public ridicule to enjoy benefits is not fair. One must create conditions where individuals no longer fear that they will be discriminated because of their sexual orientation.
